The Punjab Water Regulation and Development Authority (PWRDA) is tasked with the regulation and management of water use across the state. Its mission is to ensure the sustainable utilization of groundwater while balancing this with the livelihood needs of the population.
PWRDA mandates water conservation efforts for all groundwater users. It encourages individuals and organizations to undertake conservation measures at their own expense to meet specific conservation targets set for each zone within the state.
Should water users fail to implement these conservation measures to the required standards, they will not receive the corresponding water credits. Instead, they will be liable to pay the shortfall to the Authority as part of their groundwater usage fees. A portion of these collected charges will then be allocated by PWRDA to fund water conservation projects, as devised by the Government and carried out by designated Departments or Public Agencies.
This structured approach ensures that water conservation remains a priority and that sustainable practices are enforced to protect and manage the vital groundwater resources of Punjab.
